Step-by-Step Guide to Medical College Admission in Karnataka

Getting into a medical college in Karnataka is a dream for thousands of students every year. With over 60 recognised medical colleges across the state — including prestigious government institutions and top private colleges — Karnataka is one of India's most sought-after destinations for MBBS and BDS admissions. But the process can feel overwhelming without the right guidance.

From clearing NEET to navigating KEA counselling rounds, understanding seat categories, and preparing all the required documents — every step matters. This guide walks you through the entire admission process so you know exactly what to expect and how to prepare.

" The right guidance at the right time can be the difference between securing your dream medical seat and missing out entirely. "

Step 1: Clear NEET-UG

NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) is the single mandatory entrance exam for all MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and related medical admissions across India, including Karnataka. There are no separate state-level exams. Your NEET score and All India Rank (AIR) determine your eligibility for both government and private medical colleges in Karnataka.

  • Minimum eligibility: 50th percentile for General category (40th for SC/ST/OBC)
  • Subjects tested: Physics, Chemistry, Biology (Botany + Zoology)
  • Total marks: 720 | Duration: 3 hours 20 minutes
  • NEET score is valid for 3 years for admission purposes

Step 2: Register with KEA

Once NEET results are declared, Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) opens registrations for state counselling. You must register on the KEA portal (cetonline.karnataka.gov.in) within the specified window. This is mandatory even if you have a strong NEET score — missing the registration deadline means losing your chance at state quota seats.

During registration, you'll need to submit details like your NEET scorecard, category certificates (if applicable), Karnataka domicile proof, and other supporting documents. Ensure all documents are ready in advance so you don't miss the deadline.

Step 3: Understand Seat Categories

Karnataka medical seats are distributed across several categories. Understanding which category applies to you is critical for planning your college choices:

  • Government Quota (State Quota): 85% of government college seats, allocated through KEA based on NEET rank and domicile
  • All India Quota (AIQ): 15% of government college seats, filled through MCC counselling
  • Management Quota: Private college seats filled by the institution directly — usually higher fees but more flexible eligibility
  • NRI Quota: Reserved for NRI-sponsored candidates in private colleges
  • Minority Quota: Reserved in minority-run institutions for eligible applicants

Step 4: Attend KEA Counselling Rounds

KEA typically conducts 2–3 rounds of online counselling. In each round, you fill in your college and course preferences in order of priority. Seats are allotted based on your NEET rank, category, and availability. If you're satisfied with your allotted seat, you must pay the fee and report to the college within the deadline. If not, you can participate in subsequent rounds — but there's always a risk of losing your current allotment.

" Choosing the right order of college preferences during counselling is one of the most important — and often most misunderstood — decisions in the entire admission process. "

Step 5: Document Verification and Reporting

After seat allotment, you must complete document verification either at a KEA helpline centre or at the allotted college. Key documents typically required include:

  • NEET UG admit card and scorecard
  • Class 10 and 12 mark sheets and certificates
  • Karnataka domicile/residency certificate
  • Category certificate (SC/ST/OBC/EWS, if applicable)
  • Transfer Certificate (TC) and Migration Certificate
  • Passport-size photographs and Aadhaar card

After verification, you pay the first-year fee and physically report to the college. Missing the reporting date — even with a confirmed allotted seat — can result in cancellation of admission. Always double-check the exact deadline.
